Entrepreneur with the mission: Build. Lead. Inspire.
Hi there, I’m Kevin Shaw.
I grew up with low vision and then lost my sight from a rare form of retinopathy when I was 19. This didn’t stop me from becoming a visionary, inspirational disruptor and leader in the fields of accessibility, broadcasting, digital media and technology.
Over the past 25 years, I’ve gained an unmatched ability to solve complex problems, chart unexplored territory and inspire talented people to join me at the cutting edge to build “ahead of their time” experiences. My unique circumstances have given me a perspective that allows me to bring innovation and progress to every project I work on.
I began my career as a freelance mobile DJ and music producer before spending eight years as the Technical/Production Coordinator for CHRY Radio in Toronto. During my time there, I transformed the sound of the station, making it nationally envied in the Canadian community radio sector.
In 2012, I founded TellMe TV to address the lack of described video online, creating the world’s first 100% described video-on-demand service. My expertise and lived experience with entrepreneurship and accessibility led me to advise on the creation of an accessible media course for The Chang School of Continuing Education at Toronto Metropolitan University, as well as advising on Digital accessibility standards for the Province of Ontario.
In 2017, I joined the CNIB Foundation to create a new cross-Canada entrepreneurship program as part of CNIB’s strategic plan to boost participation in the world of work for Canadians with sight loss. I also launched The Venture Zone Game—an accessible business simulation game for iPhone.
In 2018, I founded MenuVox—a location-based app and service that pushes an accessible restaurant menu to a mobile phone. I’ve also worked as an accessibility consultant in education tech and now work in banking as the digital accessibility lead at Tangerine.
In 2022, I began hosting Mind Your Own Business—a television show on AMI TV featuring entrepreneurs with disabilities taking their business to the next level.
I’ve given many talks and have been featured in numerous media outlets including The National Post, AMI, the Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, CTV News and CBC. In November 2014, I delivered a TEDx Talk in which I demonstrated described video and challenged delegates to design inclusive experiences.
I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees in Radio & Television arts and Media Production from Toronto Metropolitan University, and currently reside in Toronto. When I’m not working, I enjoy playing drums, tandem bike riding and mixing music.
